The second week of June and climatological summer was very much early summer-like. Average temperatures this week ranged from the mid-60s in northern Illinois to the low 70s in southern Illinois, near to slightly cooler than normal. June to date has also been right around 1 degree cooler than normal, easing us into the hottest season. Growing degree days are still running behind normal because of the unusually cool end to May. That said, the relatively warm first half of spring pushed season average temperatures above normal. Last season was in fact the 11th warmest spring on record and the warmest since 2012… although this year’s spring was still a full 5 degrees cooler than spring 2012.

A few rounds of showers and storms rolled through the southern half of the state this week, with 7-day totals ranging from around a half an inch along the I-72 corridor to over 3 inches along Highway 13 in far southern Illinois. Meanwhile, most of northern Illinois had less than a half an inch for the week. This wet south-dry north pattern continues from spring. Overall, last season was around half an inch drier than normal statewide. While last season was a top 30 driest spring on record for Lake County and Tazewell County, it was a top 10 wettest spring on record for Marion County and Clay County. In Marion County, specifically, spring had just over 20 inches of total precipitation, making it the wettest spring on record there since 2008.

Looking ahead, a cooler and cloudy Friday will give way to gradually warmer weather through this weekend and into next week. We’ll see highs in the mid to upper 80s statewide next week and may crack 90 in the Metro East. The slightly warmer than normal weather will be accompanied by high humidity, possibly pushing afternoon heat index values into the triple digits. We will also continue an unsettled weather pattern this weekend and next week, with 7-day forecasted rainfall totals ranging from around 1 inch in northern Illinois to possibly over 2.5 inches in far southern Illinois. The warmer and wetter pattern is expected to persist into week 2 as well, with best chances of above average temperatures and precipitation through the last full week of June.
