Accessing Illinois Statutes

About This Publication

To access an Illinois Statute, first make a note of the citation for the Act. For example, the Illinois Fence Act is cited as 765 ILCS 130/. This means that the Act is found in Chapter 765 of the Illinois Compiled Statutes, and is Act number 130 within this Chapter. Once you have made a note of the Chapter number and Act number, do the following:

  1. Click on the button link below to the Illinois General Assembly’s home page for the Illinois Compiled Statutes.
  2. Scroll or search to find the correct Chapter (Ch. 765 in our example – it is the “Property” Chapter). This provides link to a list of all Acts within this chapter.
  3. Scroll or search to find find the desired Act number (765 ILCS 130/ Fence Act). This provides a link to the desired Act).
  4. If you are seeking a particular Section number within the Act, scroll or search through the Act until you find the desired Section. For example, Section 2 of the Illinois Fence Act is cited as 765 ILCS 130/2.
