We all breathed a sigh of relief at our much more comfortable temperatures last weekend and early next week. Temperatures in the first full week of August ranged from the low 60s in northern Illinois to the mid-70s in southern Illinois, between 1 and 5 degrees below normal. Some of the more impressive nighttime low temperatures included 49 degrees in Stockton and 50 in McHenry.

The cooler and less humid air came with a break from precipitation this week as well. 7-day totals ranged from absolutely nothing in parts of northern Illinois to just over 2 inches in parts of southeast Illinois. Most of the state has been 1 to 5 inches wetter than normal stretching back to the fourth of July, great timing for critical crop stages. Only small portions of the southwest and east-central parts of the state have been 1 to 2 inches drier than normal over the last 30 days.

Looking ahead, most of the weather action looks to stay to our northwest, but areas between Macomb and Freeport could see significant rainfall over the next 7 days. Forecasts range from around a quarter of an inch in southern Illinois to the possibility of 3 inches in far northwest Illinois. Meanwhile, the heat and humidity are back on next week with high temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s, low temperatures in the 70s, and high humidity. A good reminder that despite last week’s weather, the calendar still says August.
